Fulton Street Trade Cards

Thousands of photographs and other images that document New York’s history are accessible for free at Digital Culture of Metropolitan New York, http://www.dcmny.org. The website hosts online collections of participating institutions from New York City and Westchester County. Among the varied collections —which are keyword searchable—are: “New-York Historical Society, Photographs of New York City and Beyond,” which presents more than 16,000 portraits, building photos, and street scenes from 1839 to 1945; “Maritime College, Sailors’ Snug Harbor Archives,” which documents the 140-year history of the Staten Island home for retired and disabled seamen; and “Brooklyn Public Library, Fulton Street Trade Cards,” which is a colorful record of Brooklyn businesses of the late 19th– and early 20th-century.
