Thousands of photographs and other images that document New York’s history are accessible for free at Digital Culture of Metropolitan New York, The website hosts online collections of participating institutions from New York City and Westchester County. Among the varied collections —which are keyword searchable—are: “New-York Historical Society, Photographs of New York City and Beyond,” which presents more than 16,000 portraits, building photos, and street scenes from 1839 to 1945; “Maritime College, Sailors’ Snug Harbor Archives,” which documents the 140-year history of the Staten Island home for retired and disabled seamen; and “Brooklyn Public Library, Fulton Street Trade Cards,” which is a colorful record of Brooklyn businesses of the late 19th– and early 20th-century.
