A recent New York Times article details the history of the Van Alst family in Long Island City. The family settled in the area as early as 1652, and a family cemetery is thought to be located on land now scheduled for development. After a long search for descendants, any remains found by archaeologists surveying the land will be re-interred elsewhere per the wishes of the descendants.
