Halloween is one time of year that a great resource for genealogists- cemeteries- gets a lot of attention. Two notable New York cemeteries are hosting tours this season.
Sleepy Hollow Cemetery features a ‘Classic lantern tour’ as well as ‘The Good, the Bad and the Unusual’ tour and a ‘Murder and Mayhem’ tour in the cemetery during evenings in October and November. These tours introduce visitors to the famous- and infamous- residents in the cemetery, including Washington Irving, author of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” There is also an afternoon guided walking tour available. To buy tickets for any of these tours, as well as for more information, see the Cemetery Tours page at VisitSleepyHollow.com.
Green-Wood Cemetery is offering a ‘Spirited Stroll Through Green-Wood’ tour on October 27, 2013 at 1:00pm. The tour will be led by Green-Wood Historian Jeff RIchman and will visit the graves of Green-Woods more well-known residents, as well as a tour of the Catacombs, usually closed to the public. To buy tickets and for more information, see the event on Green-Wood cemetery’s website.
